First prize for a doctoral student from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering

Karolina Sadowska, MSc, Eng, a doctoral student in the discipline of Automation, Electronics and Electrical Engineering won the first prize for the best presentation at PRE’22 during the Symposium on Photoluminescence in Rare Earths: Photonic Materials and the ICMS Conference held in Szczawnica from 11 to 14 September 2023. Her scientific supervisor is Assoc. Prof. Jacek Żmojda, DSc, PhD, Eng.
Karolina Sadowska presented the paper „Analysis of excitation energy transfer in LaPO4 nanophosphors co-doped with Eu3+/Nd3+/Yb3+ ions” authored by Karolina Sadowska, Monika Kalinowska, Kamila Gryko, Magdalena Leśniak, Dominik Dorosz and Jacek Żmojda.
The subject of the publication is the analysis of the possibility of shaping the emission spectrum of LaPO4 by doping with rare earth elements. Fluorescent nanophosphors doped with trivalent lanthanides are used in lighting, phototherapy and photodynamic technology. They exhibit high UV resistance, chemical stability and unique properties: high detection capability and increased ranges of tissue penetration, a trait valued in biomedical applications in the first (NIR-I: 650-950 nm) and second (NIR-II: 1000-1350 nm) biological windows.
Karolina Sadowska, MSc, Eng is a graduate of biomedical engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of BUT. She was granted engineer’s degree in 2018 and master’s degree in 2020. This year, she started her doctoral studies in the discipline of Automation, Electronics and Electrical Engineering. Her first papers were published while she was still pursuing her previous degrees. She was also a finalist in the Technotalent competition. In 2021, she participated in the “European Cross-Border Doctorials” summer school (Languedoc-Roussillon Doctoral College), and in 2022 in “ECerS Krakow Sintering Summer School”. In 2021, she obtained funding for her research on development of luminescent nanocrystals by coprecipitation, which she is carrying out by herself at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of BUT. Her scientific interests involve the interaction of optical radiation with matter and the technology of new functional photonic materials.
